MOUNT OLIVE -- Mrs. Essie Sullivan Barwick, 97, Oak Ridge community near Mount Olive, passed away Saturday night, April 6, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Services to remember and celebrate her long and happy life will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Tyndall Funeral Home, and will be officiated by the Rev. Wanda Simmons, and followed by visitation. Burial will be Wednesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.
Friends and family are also being received at Mrs. Essie's residence.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Elnor B. Brickhouse of Atlantic, N.C., Rose B. and Vernon Carter of Mount Olive and Mary B. and Ricky Willis of Newport, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Lettie P. Barwick of Mount Olive; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Colon and Jean Sullivan of Mount Olive and Goldsboro; and many nieces and nephews, including special niece, Sue S. Rogers of Mount Olive, who kept a watchful eye on her Aunt Essie and the care she was receiving.
Mrs. Barwick was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald Barwick and James A. "Jimmy" Barwick; her husband, Morris James Barwick; a son-in-law, Harry Brickhouse; her parents, Jesse and Addie Herring Sullivan; a sister, Thelma S. Pate; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jesse James and Mable Sullivan.
She was a longtime member of Bethel United Methodist Church, and had been very active in its United Methodist Women.
A farm wife and homemaker, she was quite handy with a sewing needle, and had been employed with Young Squire Industries.
Known for her quilting and embroidery skills, she, too, enjoyed gardening, yard work and tending to her flowers, and she is remembered for her love for fishing.
With the exception of the last few years in which she resided at Sunbridge Care Center (now Genesis), all her years were lived in the Oak Ridge community, where she was regarded as a good neighbor and dear friend to many.
