Died May 10, 2012

NEWTON GROVE -- Mae Ellen Warwick, former educator, lifetime student, world traveler and teacher of many, died May 10, 2012.

Born in 1920 in Clinton, she was the daughter of Junnie and Ellen Vann Warren.

When Mae Ellen was small, the family moved to the country, where she was reared, and where she maintained her lifetime residence.

She was a graduate of Westbrook High School, now part of Hobbton High School, and East Carolina Teacher's College, now East Carolina University.

She was a teacher for more than 30 years in the public schools of North Carolina, Florida and Oklahoma. Most of her teaching years were spent at Hobbton High School, where she taught English and French.

Her last teaching years were spent at Mount Olive College, where she was a part-time French instructor with valuable help from French natives.

She was an active member of Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where she taught the adult Sunday school class for many years. She was study course chairman of the women's auxiliary for many years, and always enjoyed inviting a variety of good resourceful speakers.

Her church life was very important to her. She grew up attending Oak Grove Church, which she supported all of her life.

She was a member of Goldsboro Woman's Club and an active member of the David Williams Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution. She enjoyed doing research and presenting historical programs for her chapter.

She was a member of Delta Mu Society of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society for women educators. She served in many offices of this prestigious organization, including district director.

She was an active member of Newton Grove Chapter No. 267 of the Order of Eastern Star. She served as worthy matron and in other offices during her long membership of 60 years approximately.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Warwick, and her parents, Junnie and Ellen Vann Warren.

She had close ties with her husband's family, including Frances and Thelton Lee Warwick, and their family, in addition to Jaxie Thornton Cavenah and Libby Jackson and their families.

Her caregivers, the Aaron Crumpler family, were very special to her. She leaves limitless thanks to Katherine Crumpler Jones, who was her daytime caregiver for more than 20 years. She was loved as a daughter by Mae Ellen.

Katherine's mother, Margaret Crumpler, was an excellent night caregiver, and was dearly loved by Mae Ellen.

Brenda Crumpler was another member of the family whom Mae Ellen loved and appreciated.

Her sister-in-law, Margie Warwick of Goldsboro, was another treasure who survives her.

Her very close cousins, Frances Lewis and Dean Heatherly of Dunn, were very special to her also.

She had three godchildren, Christina Narvell of Wilmington and Mary Dobson of Stafford, Va., in addition to Al Whitfield of Goldsboro.

She felt close to the families of her godchildren, Paul Dobson, son of Mary and Joe Dobson, was like a grandson to Mae Ellen.

Mary Dobson's mother, Evelyn High of Raleigh, became a lifetime friend to Mae Ellen as a result of their teaching years together.

She leaves a special tribute to the late Dr. Burkette Raper, who graciously served as her power of attorney.

Many thanks go also to Mary Ann Hill for her personal and real estate advice. Her time spent with them was very valuable.

Time spent with her Vann and Warren cousins was very special to her.

Mae Ellen was blessed to be able to travel. With her husband, the late Ray Warwick, she toured more than 100 free countries. Her travel knowledge gave a good supplement to her textbook instruction. As a result, she instilled within many of her students a desire to travel and to reach a high potential in life.

Although she had no children of her own, she considered her former students as her family. She was always happy to see them and to spend time with them.

Her service will be conducted at Oak Grove Church, 3311 Newton Grove Highway, Newton Grove, Saturday, May 12, with burial following in Warren-Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Dustin R. Bannister, pastor, and the Rev. Ricky Warren will conduct the services.
