DURWOOD JOHNSON MURRAY

Durwood "D.J." Johnson Murray, 93, passed away on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 24, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
The family will receive friends today, Nov. 27, 2011, from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. James Harry officiating.
Mr. Murray was born Sept. 27, 1918. He was the son of the late William B. Murray and Effie Johnson Murray of Kenansville in Duplin County.
Durwood was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Goldsboro. He enjoyed participating in J. Paul Edwards Sunday School Class.
D.J. attended Mars Hill College, and graduated from N.C. State University at Raleigh in the class of 1940. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed on the West Coast. He returned to North Carolina and became a Wayne County Agricultural Agent.
D.J. Murray and his brother, Bill Murray, were owners and operators of Murray Supply Company of Mount Olive. They were also co-owners of House of Raeford turkey production plant. Durwood was devoted to eastern North Carolina. He was both knowledgeable and captivated with the farmland, the forests and history of this area.
Durwood is survived by his wife, Mae Hendrix Murray; his daughters, Elizabeth and Susan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Durwood Johnson Murray II.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church at 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, NC 27530.
