VIOLA CATHERINE FLEMING UZZELL

Viola Catherine "Jim" Fleming Uzzell, 62, departed this life "walking up the King's highway," on Oct. 13, 2011, at 6:15 p.m. in Durham.

The wake will be held Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church Eureka. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at 11 a.m. at L.N. Forbes Tabernacle, 1800 Lane St. SE, Wilson. Pastor Fred Presley, First Baptist Eureka, will be presiding, and the eulogy will be by Minister Joseph Braswell of Georgia.

She was born July 8, 1949, in Eureka and was the second born of the late Deacon Douglass Lee and Mother Ida B. Hill Fleming. In 1967, she graduated from Norwayne High School and married Darius Lee Uzzell Sr.

She joined First Baptist Eureka Church in 1965 and was a faithful member and pianist until her health failed. She was also the pianist for St. Luke FWB in Stantonsburg for 53 years. Catherine Uzzell sang with many groups and she was one of the most anointed gospel singers of her time. To name a few: The Fleming Singers, St. Luke FWB Senior Choir, JB Rhodes Community Singers, The Holy Ghost Drawing Center and St. Stephens Baptist Church. She was the founder, producer and song writer of eight gospel recordings of the Fleming Sisters.

In 1997, Catherine retired from O'Berry Center in Goldsboro after 30 years of service. She was a lifetime member of Norwayne High School.

She leaves to cherish her memory Darius Lee Uzzell, two children, Daries Jr. (Junie) and Odessa Waters (Boo), of Raleigh; special son, Wilbert Lee Harper Jr., Greensboro; four sisters, Dorothy F. Brown of Upper Marlboro, Md., Geraldine F. Harper of Greensboro, Ethelene F. Reid of Pikeville, Ida Mae Fleming of Durham; one god-brother, Bobby Artis and one god-son, Tony Wellington, both of Eureka; one god-sister, Yvonne Jones Byrd of Capitol Heights, Md.; her best friend, Shirley Jean Hinnant of Goldsboro; four grandchildren; five aunts and three uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews (the next of kin), and great-nieces and nephews.
