EDNA H. MELTON
March 4, 1928-June 3, 2011
Edna Earle Holloman Melton, 83, died on Friday evening surrounded by her family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 7, 2011, from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at Madison Avenue Baptist Church followed by her funeral service at 11:30 a.m. with Dr. Bob Fulkerson officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. Edna will lie in state at Seymour Funeral Home on Monday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Edna was born in Edgecombe County on March 4, 1928, to Shiloh Jarvis and Mattie Bell Gay Holloman. She graduated from Walstonburg High School in 1944, Mars Hill College in 1946 and East Carolina Teachers College in 1948 with Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. Edna then began working with the Goldsboro City School System and retired after 30 years of service. Edna also had worked with the Goldsboro City Schools Follow Through Program. She was awarded the George Steele Dewey Scholarship by the Goldsboro Jaycee's for her excellence in teaching. Edna was a member of the Alpha Delta Sorority.
Edna's primary goal was the happiness and security of her family. She will be remembered as loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend to so many. Edna always enjoyed visiting with her church family and friends. She could often be found helping others in her community and was a charter member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. Edna was also an active member of Madison Avenue's WMU, served as president of her Sunday school class and was the church treasurer. She was a long-time member of the Goldsboro Garden Club and the Goldsboro Woman's Club.
Edna is survived by her husband of 62 years, Allie J. Melton Jr.; her sons, James Brent Melton and wife, Lisa, of Raleigh and Miles Darius Melton and Sandra of Lillington; her grandsons, Chad Melton and Tanner Melton; her special sister-in-law, Faye Holloman of Walstonburg and several special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Stephen Holloman Sr., Shiloh Jarvis Holloman Jr. and James David Holloman.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of the sixth floor at Wayne Memorial Hospital, the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center and her many friends that expressed love and care to Edna during her declining health.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Madison Avenue Baptist Church, 300 S. Madison Ave., Goldsboro, NC 27530, or to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
