LT. COL. PATRICIA ANN KENNEDY

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Patricia Ann Kennedy, 72, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Patricia was born in Youngstown, Ohio, March 15, 1938, to the late Patrick Edward Kennedy and Catherine Rielly Kennedy, but claimed Flushing, N.Y., as her hometown.

She graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1959, and served for six years at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where she was charge nurse of the cardiopulmonary lab.

After later serving as an advisor in organizational services in the American Nurses Association, she joined the Air Force Jan. 31, 1969. Duty assignments included staff nurse at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., March 1970 to October 1970; flight nurse, 11th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., November 1970 to December 1971; flight instructor flight examiner with the 9th Aeromedical Evacuation Group at Clark Air Base in the Republic of the Philippines June 1972 to June 1973; an aerospace residency at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, July 1973 to June 1974; aerospace nurse flight surgeon extender, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, July 1974 to October 1976; chief of environmental health, Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, October 1976 to August 1977; AFIT student, Teachers' College, New York, September 1977 to May 1979; supervisor of outpatient services at Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., June 1979 to March 1981; chief of nursing systems development, RAF Little Rissington, England, April 1981 to October 1982; assistant chief nurse, Pease Air Force Base, N.H., November 1982 to June 1984; and chief, nursing service, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., June 1984 to Jan. 31, 1989.

She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Long Island University, N.Y., in 1970; an MA in clinical supervision at Teachers' College, N.Y., in 1979; and an MEd in nursing service administration, Teachers' College, N.Y., in 1979.

Professional military education includes completion of Squadron Officers' School in 1977, Nursing Service Management in 1977 and Air Command and Staff College in 1981.

Military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Vietnam Service Medal.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 11, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Tom Norris, O.S.F.S., presiding.

Patricia is survived by her brother, Paul E. Kennedy and his wife, Sandra, and two nephews, Edward and Michael and his wife, Nicole, all of Accomac, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Society of St. Vincent De Paul at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 1000 N. Jefferson Ave., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 10, 2011, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church.
