WINSTON-SALEM -- Nelson Walker Thomas, 72, formerly of Goldsboro, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011.

Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 20, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Norman Fargis officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park with military honors.

Nelson was born in Greene County on Aug. 25, 1938, to the late James William Thomas and Minnie Mae Carlisle Thomas. He served his country in the United States Army in Korea. Nelson was a long-distance road driver for Mclean and Roadway Trucking Co., retiring with 31 years of service. He enjoyed working in the garden, fishing, but most of all spending time with his family, grandchildren and his beloved canine companion, Lady.

Nelson is survived by his wife, Orva Aman Thomas; his children, Regina Waldrop and husband, Bill, of Chesterfield, Va.; Danny Cherry and wife, Gale, of Diamond Bar of California; Shelton Cherry and Cheryl of Gloucester, Va.; Jenny Thomas, Ray Thomas, Ricky Thomas; his siblings, Linda Sullivan of Spartanburg, S.C.; Earl Thomas and wife, Kelly, of Mebane; Charlie Thomas and wife, Donna, of Mount Olive; his grandchildren, Brett and Sherri Waldrop, Angela Darafeev; and his great-grandchild, Ayden Darafeev along with several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Regional Cancer Center, Attn: Sharon Murphy, 1010 Bethesada Court, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Hospice and Palliative Care Center at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
