ESTELLE BRANNAN BATTEN THROCKMORTON

Estelle "Snip" Brannan Batten Throckmorton finished her journey home to her Lord Dec. 18 with her loving family at her side.
Snip was the daughter of the late Dora Barham Brannan and Ed Ransom Brannan of Selma.
As one of 11 children, she often recalled fond memories of growing up on the farm in the Thanksgiving area of Johnston County.
She married Milford Cournel Batten in 1946 and was his mate until his death in 1986. For most of their years together, they lived in the Pine Villa area of Lenoir County, where they reared their three children.
Snip and Cournel were charter members of First Baptist Church of Grifton.
Snip was an active member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 134, and served as grand matron.
She was primarily a homemaker, always busy with cooking, cleaning, sewing and assisting with gardening and preserving the harvests.
Snip also worked as a medical secretary when her children were older.
In 1991, Snip married Thomas Throckmorton of Kinston, and enjoyed a brief but happy companionship.
They were members of Queen Street Methodist Church.
When she was again widowed in 1992, Snip remained in Kinston and dedicated her life to caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was skilled at both contract and duplicate bridge, and cherished the opportunities to play with her friends several times weekly.
An avid fan, she loved Tar Heel sports, especially basketball. She also followed professional baseball closely, particularly the Braves, and had a wealth of knowledge about the sport.
Snip often traveled with friends, and she specifically enjoyed many trips to Atlantic City and Cherokee.
She is survived by her children, Melody B. Yeargan and husband, L. Wayne Yeargan, of Raleigh, David L. Batten and wife, Marie Cogdell Batten of Goldsboro and Colette B. Teachey of Jacksonville; her grandchildren, David L. Batten II, Eva Marie Scott, Jonathan E. Batten and wife, Julie, Brannan D. Teachey and Bryant C. Teachey; and her great-grandchildren, Kayla Scott, Kimberly Scott, Austin Alexander and Ashlyn Batten.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m., with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Grifton. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Estates in Grifton.
The family wishes to thank its many friends and family and especially the staff at Mayview Convalescent Center for their loving care and support of our precious mother.
