TEMPE NEWSOM PROUTY

Tempe Newsom Prouty, 97, passed away on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Sterling House of Goldsboro surrounded by family members.
Following a private interment there will be a celebration of Mrs. Prouty's life and resurrection on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. at University United Methodist Church, 150 East Franklin St. in Chapel Hill.
Mrs. Prouty was born in Durham on July 18th, 1913. She lived a life of relentless love for her family and for those less fortunate.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Prouty of Chapel Hill; her sister, Dorothy Newsom Rankin, of Durham, and brother, Dallas Walton Newsom Jr. She is survived by her three children, Frederick Prouty and wife, Cheryl, of Nashville, Tenn., Pat Forrest and husband, Terry, of Goldsboro, Pam Naugle and husband, Richard, of Fuquay-Varina; and five grandchildren and one great grandson.
Mrs. Prouty's mother, Tempie Battle Newsom, was Durham's first public school music teacher and revered soloist and voice teacher. Her father, Dallas Walton Newsom, was Registrar and Treasurer of Trinity College (later Duke University), and was the first County Manager of Durham County.
She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her degree at Duke University. She married CDR Frederick Morgan Prouty Sr. (USNR), of Chapel Hill. She continued employment in various administrative assistant capacities until the untimely death of her husband in July 1966.
Moving to Chapel Hill, Mrs. Prouty was administrative assistant to Professor Albert Coates, founder and director of the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill, and was administrative assistant to Dr. Benjamin Swalin, Director of the North Carolina Symphony. She was employed until retirement as administrative assistant at General Administration of the University of North Carolina.
After retiring in 1979 Mrs. Prouty enjoyed life in Chapel Hill and her beloved family. Throughout her life, she was a loyal member of the Methodist Church, was a long-time volunteer with Interfaith Council for Social Services in Carrboro, and performed many quiet, unsung missions of aid and encouragement to people in the community. She spent the remainder of her life close to family at the Sterling House of Goldsboro. The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of the Sterling House for their wonderful, compassionate care, along with gratitude for caregivers at Community Health and Hospice.
