OSCAR LEONARD HILL

Oscar Leonard "O.L." Hill, 79, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice Center in Greenville, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
A memorial service honoring O.L. Hill will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Farmer Funeral Home in Ayden.
He was a resident of Surf City.
Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Christine Davis Hill, of the home. Mr. Hill was formerly married to Hilda Westbrook Hill of Goldsboro. He is also survived by a son, Richard L. Hill and his wife, Pam, of Greenville; a daughter, Toni Lynn Hill Wood and her husband, Chris, of LaGrange. He is also survived by two stepsons, Steve Shakelford and wife, Bonnie, of Boone, and Ron Shakelford and wife, Marilynn, of Wilmington. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by a son, Gregory L. Hill.
Mr. Hill is also survived by the following grandchildren, Amanda H. Lovett, and husband, Matt, of Snow Hill, Christy Hill, David Hill, Stephanie Hill and Jeffrey Hill, all of Greenville, Tracy Underwood, Mark Underwood, T.J. Underwood, Christopher Wood Jr., Joseph Wood and Ben Wood, all of LaGrange; and a great-granddaughter, Lilly Ann Wood of LaGrange. Mr. Hill is also survived by nephews, cousins and several close friends whom he cared about.
Mr. Hill served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later became a journeyman pipe fitter. Mr. Hill also spent several years as a long-distance truck driver. Most recently, Mr. Hill worked with his son at R/C Homes in Greenville.
Per his request, Mr. Hill's body will be donated to ECU School of Medicine for scientific study. Mr. Hill was firm in his belief that researchers may be able to study the human body in an effort to cure diseases like cancer.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice Center, or the charity of your choice.
