PIKEVILLE -- James Ray Johnson, 81, 561 Gurley Dairy Road, passed away Wednesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
Funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with Ken Spivey and Eric Woods officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery
Mr. Johnson was born in Wayne County Oct. 10, 1928, to the late James Relmon Johnson and Flossie Gurley Johnson.
He was a farmer in Nahunta community for many years and had retired from Agrevo.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Nahunta Friends Meeting, where he was instrumental in the building fund program.
He retired as a volunteer fireman in 1983 and had served as assistant chief of Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department and as the first chief of Little River Volunteer Fire Department.
He was a member of Nahunta Grange and Junior Order and the Wayne County Fireman's Association, where he had served as president in 1966.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Irene Brown Johnson; his daughter, Kay Cherry of Panama City, Fla.; his son, Perry Johnson and wife, Monica, of Pikeville; his granddaughter, Katie Cherry; his grandsons, Aaron Johnson, Matthew Cherry and wife, Angi, and Noah Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Tanner Cherry and Dylan Cherry.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to Nahunta Friends Meeting, 2537 N.C. 581 north, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.
