ESSIE MAE JONES ANDERSON
June 23, 1926 - December 12, 2009
Essie Mae Jones Anderson died Saturday peacefully in her sleep at Kitty Atkins Hospice Center. She was a loving wife, mother and Christian.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church, 752 Stoney Creek Church Road. There will be a time of visiting and sharing with the family following the service.
Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, U.S. 70 West, of Goldsboro. The Rev. Barry Williamson will officiate.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, William Thomas Anderson Sr.; and by her sons, Robert Edward Anderson and William Thomas Anderson Jr., both of Raleigh; and an adopted daughter, Ruth Ann Brittinger, of Garner. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters, Jesse Ellen Waters and Sarah Ethel Pierce, both of Rosewood; sisters-in-law Susan Virginia Spencer and Mildred Lee Singleton, both of Goldsboro and Edna Rose Blackmon of Four Oaks. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Johnston County to Effie Tyner Jones and Joe Jones Jr., and was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Lois Worley and Dorothy Rose King.
Mrs. Anderson was a devoted Christian all of her life. She was a long-time member of Oak Heights Church in Goldsboro, and for the last 33 years, a member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church in the Patetown community. One of her favorite activities was teaching Sunday school class. She taught Sunday school classes to all ages for over 50 years, including the last class she taught, the Ambassador Class at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church.
The family wishes to thank all the staff of Britthaven Nursing Home for taking such great care of her for the last five years. Also appreciated is the kindness extended to her by the staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital, and by Kitty Atkins Hospice Center in her last few days.
