PLYMOUTH -- Robert "Bob" Lee Howell died Sunday of natural causes at Britthaven of the Outer Banks.
Celebration of life services will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member.
He was born in Wayne County Feb. 19, 1921, and was raised in Pikeville.
Bob proudly served in World War II in the United States Army.
He was a deacon and devoted Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Plymouth and served as a member of the Jaycees and Lions Club as well as an assistant scout master. He served as a board member for Seaboard Savings and Loan and devoted 29 years of working to Belk.
He was well-known for his positive attitude, ready smile and wonderful temperament. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his sister, Geneva Howell Rohrs of Florida; his children and their spouses, Steve and Martha Howell of Manteo and Phil and Cherry Howell of Kill Devil Hills; his grandchildren, Nicholas Howell of Palm Beach, Fla., Megan Howell of Telluride, Colo., and Casey Howell of Manteo; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his father, Burrell Daniel Howell; his mother, Pett Minshew Howell; his wife, Edna Parnell Howell; his brothers, Paul Howell, Jim Howell, B.D. Howell and Ed Howell; and his sisters, Ethel Howell Owens, Lou Ellen Howell Vail, Fannie Howell Bracey and Nina Howell Caldwell.
Family will receive friends and guests at 1 p.m. today before the ceremony in the church fellowship hall.
Donations may be made to Plymouth Lions Club, 1113 E. Main St., Plymouth, N.C., 27962, or First Baptist Church, 309 Washington St., Plymouth, N.C., 27962, in lieu of flowers.
Thanks to the many staff and friends at Spring Arbor and Britthaven of the Outer Banks who worked so hard to allow Bob to maintain his active lifestyle.
Arrangements are by Maitland Memorial Chapel of Plymouth.
