FREMONT -- Sarah Lancaster Pittman, 90, Pinkney Community, passed away suddenly Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Glosson officiating. Burial will follow in Lancaster Family Cemetery.
Sarah was born in Wayne County Oct. 5, 1919, to the late David Oscar Lancaster and Mary Elizabeth Williams Lancaster.
While a child and living in the Patetown community, Sarah was an active member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church, where she played the piano for church services.
After graduating from high school, she attended East Carolina Teacher's College for a short while.
Sarah's mother died at a young age leaving her to help raise her youngest brother, Selby, whom she always loved so dearly, more than just her little brother, but as a son. Sarah left the Patetown community when Selby was a teenager to marry Willard A. Pittman.
After marriage, Sarah soon joined Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church and became very active in the church. She worked with Vacation Bible School, was also active in the ladies auxiliary and served as president for several years. Sarah was also a member of Nahunta Home Economics Club for many years.
Her children can remember their mother baking and taking goodies to the shut-ins in the Pinkney community. She would have quiltings at home and always found time to sew for her two girls from grammar grades through high school. It was in May 2009 that the ladies auxiliary at Union Grove named Sarah "Woman of the Year."
Sarah is survived by her daughters, Wilma Pittman of Pinkney and Janet Pittman of Goldsboro; her son, David Pittman and wife, Cindy, of Pinkney; two grandchildren, Christy Pittman and Matthew Pittman; and her brother, Selby Lancaster and wife, Rose, of Goldsboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard A. Pittman, and her brothers, Hugh Bryant Lancaster, James Forrest (Shanghai) Lancaster, Harold W. Lancaster and Dewey Lancaster.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, 1283 Union Grove Church Road, Fremont, NC, 27830.
