Mary Ruth Lyons, 84, lovingly known by her family and friends as "Baby Ruth," 206 Audubon Ave., passed from labor to reward Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 318 Denmark St. in Goldsboro, with the Rev. Arthur Evans officiating. Entombment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery, 2925 S. U.S. 117 in Goldsboro.
"Baby Ruth" was born in Wayne County June 10, 1925, the daughter of the late Ruth Strickland Teachey and George A. Teachey Sr. She was married to Don Lyons and her honorable son was William H. Bass Jr., who preceded her in death.
Upon retirement, Mary Ruth returned to Goldsboro as an active member of Greater Dillard Alumni Association as well as a lifetime member of the NAACP. Also, she volunteered as a foster grandparent for the WAGES Program for several years. As a devoted member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, she was a dedicated member of the usher board.
"Baby Ruth" leaves to cherish her memories two grandsons; Baron Bass of Laurel, Md., and Derek Bass of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Ella Joyce S. Bryant of Goldsboro; four great-grandchildren, Shavetta, Le Lundon, Brianna and Le Baron Jr.; four great-great-grandchildren, Aniyah, Ezekiel, Takevius and Heavenly; two nieces, Barbara Martin of Goldsboro and Deborah B. Hamilton of Raleigh; two nephews, Jimmy Bryant of Goldsboro and Georgie Teachey of St. Albands, N.Y.; and a host of cousins and friends.
A public viewing will be held Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St. in Goldsboro. Also, a wake will be conducted Wednesday at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St. in Goldsboro from 6 to 7 p.m.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence of Mary Ruth Lyons, 206 Audubon Ave. in Goldsboro.
