SHENYANG, China -- Scott A. Gates, 50, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack Friday.
Memorial service arrangements will be made at a later date.
He was employed at Shenyang Agricul-tural University and at an English language school as an English instructor. He had just received the Teacher of the Year Award at a banquet in Beijing, the capital, and was going to be sent to Vietnam to speak to students about enrolling in his university.
He was born Oct. 2, 1958, in Des Moines, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, YanHui "Dawn" Liu of Shenyang; his parents, Merlin A. and E. Kay Gates of Goldsboro; a son, Joshua Gates of Meadville, Pa.; daughters Jacklyn Gates of Frankfurt, Germany, and Melissa McIntosh and husband, Tom, of Cambridge Springs, Pa.; sisters, Krista Gates of Apex and Tracy Anderson and husband, Dean, and children, Justin and Taylor, of Goldsboro; a loving uncle and aunt, Charles and Janet Richardson of Mason City, Iowa, and their family; and many other nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jill Elizabeth Gates.
