Ann Marks Scott of 1203 S. Slocumb St., died Thursday at her home.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at 1 p.m. at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church. The Rev. Dr. Dwight B. Cannon will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Ann Marks Scott was born in South Carolina, where she grew up and received her formal training. She was a graduate of Howard High School in Georgetown, S.C., and South Carolina State College (now South Carolina University) in Orangeburg, S.C. After graduating, she taught school for a short period of time at Georgetown County Training School in Andrews, S C.
She was the daughter of the late Mary and Hughie Chandler of Andrews, and lived there until 1942. At that time, she moved to Goldsboro to join her husband, the late A. Martel Scott Sr., in the restaurant business.
Mrs. Scott was an active member of St. James A.M.E. Zion Church for many years. Her failing health prevented her from attending as she would have liked. She was a former member of the Stewardess Board and an active member of the Floral Club.
Mrs. Scott, in her early years, served as president of the PTA Council and also worked at School Street School and West Elm Street Junior High as president of the PTA organizations. She also served on various committees of Dillard High School. All of her children were students at these schools. She was a loving and proud mother and truly loved her family, friends and neighbors.
She was a charter member of the Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the Daughters of Isis. She was also an active member of the Dragonette Club, where she had been a member for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Scott, along with her husband, owned and operated Scott's Barbecue and Scott's Sauce Company until his death in 1992. She continued to work in the business after his death, serving as chairman of the board until her death. Mrs. Scott was married to the late Alvin Martel Scott Sr. for 52 years. Mr. Scott passed away on July 26, 1992.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Alvin Martel Scott, Jr. (Sandra) of Goldsboro; her daughter, Sybil Scott Seward (Eugene); her daughter-in-law, Ingrid F. Scott of Los Angeles, Calif.; her foster daughter, Tiki Scott Flynn (David) of Mexico; her five grandchildren, Alvin Martel Scott III, of Goldsboro, Ingrid Scott Harrison (Calvin) of Glenn Dale, Md., Sean Patrick Scott (Pamela) of Charlotte, James Dozier Scott Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., and Eugene Lewis Seward III (Misty) of Rock Hill, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Alexander Calvin Harrison and Christina Ingrid Harrison of Glenn Dale, Md., and Cameron Michael Scott and Brittany Kristine Scott of Charlotte; her aunt, Theresa J. Dumas of Atlantic City, N.J.; a devoted friend and aunt, Mae D. Marks of Dudley; and a beloved and lovely young lady she called her daughter, Miss Veronica E. Keith of Hyattsville, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Miriam S. Brock of Goldsboro, and Ava M. Scott of Luft, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, William and Gerald Scott of Winston-Salem; and a stepmother-in-law, Adele S. Norton of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by many other men and young women she affectionately called "my children," because they at one time were employed in her business, and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her sons, Charles Ernest Scott (May 17, 1970) and James D. "Jimmy" Scott (June 15, 2005).
She extends a special thank-you to her housekeeper and friend, Helen Davis.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.
