ATLANTIC BEACH -- Janie Smith Archer of Atlantic Beach and Raleigh died Sunday at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City.

She was born in Nahunta (Wayne County) on March 24, 1930. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maggie Mitchell Smith and Elbert Smith, her stepfather, Foy H. Thompson and her beloved grandfather, John Mitchell.

She graduated from Nahunta High School and The Woman's College of The University of North Carolina (UNC-G). She held a bachelor's and master's degrees in health and physical education. Janie was a well-respected educator and basketball coach. She taught at Converse College, Mount Olive College, East Carolina University and Meredith College. Following a brief retirement, she returned to serve the state of North Carolina in the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. She was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. James B. Hunt for outstanding service and dedication to the state of North Carolina. Unable to stay idle for long, Janie embarked on a third career as a congressional liason with FEMA (Homeland Security), during which time she provided disaster relief throughout the United States and received many honors of recognition for her service.

Mrs. Archer served on the board of trustees of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a past president of the Woman's Club of Raleigh, as well as editor of its cookbook and chairwoman of its annual antique show. Wherever she served or worked, Janie was known for her quiet strength, faith in people and outstanding leadership abilities.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Harry James Archer Jr. of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Archer Moore and husband, Rob, of Winston-Salem; a son, Harry James Archer, III and wife, Sally, of Wilmington; grandchildren, David Robertson LaFar Moore and Elizabeth Archer Moore of Winston-Salem, Harry James Archer IV, Charles Russell Robins Archer and James Edward Dowd Archer of Wilmington.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Timothy Busteed, Dr. William King and the administration and staff at Snug Harbor and Carteret General Hospital.

Services will be held at St. Francis By The Sea Episcopal Church on Thursday, November 30, at 2 p.m. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to The Woman's Club of Raleigh, 3300 Woman's Club Drive , Raleigh, NC 27612, St. Francis By The Sea Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 7, Salter Path, NC 28575 or to a charity of the donors choice.
