MARSHALL COX

Marshall Edwin Cox, Sr., 74, of 3109 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, died Friday.
Mr. Cox was born in Wayne County to parents Robert Edwin Cox and Eliza Herring Cox in the home where he has lived his entire life. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marguerite Hinnant Cox, and their two sons, Marshall Edwin Cox Jr. and his wife, Rita McGarrity Cox, of Nashville, Tenn., and Michael Glenn Cox and his wife, Kathy Williams Cox, of Chapel Hill. He has two grandsons, Adam Michael Cox and Jason Marshall Cox; and a nephew, Edwin Lane Yelverton and his wife, Patricia Burke Yelverton, of Durham. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Judy Hinnant Smith of Nashville, and a brother-in-law, Carleton Lee "Bud" Hinnant of Hampstead. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Williams Cox and Eliza Herring Cox Yelverton Reeves; a brother, Jesse Thompson Cox; and in-laws, T. Glenn and Sallie Daniels Hinnant.
Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church was very dear to him. He moved his membership from Thompson's Chapel Methodist Church when it closed and was married to Marguerite at Daniels Memorial, where he chaired and worked on many committees. He was a member of the Gleaners Sunday school class and the Administrative Board. He was happiest working with his tractor at the church and parsonage.
Marshall Cox graduated from New Hope High School and attended N.C. State University, where he studied agriculture. His career efforts included farming and the development of residential, commercial and medical real estate properties. Marshall lived a fulfilling life with family, friends, church and the Shrine. He enjoyed hunting and boating, belonging to numerous sporting clubs through the years. He was instrumental in establishing the Wayne County Wildlife Club and served as its first president.
Mr. Cox was an active member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks No. 139, where he served as Exalted Ruler. He served four terms as a Trustee, and received the Elk of the Year Award in 1990.
As a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge No. 112, Mr. Cox belonged to the Scottish and York Rite Bodies. He joined the Shrine in 1962 and was a member of Sudan Temple's Director's Staff, later serving as Director. For a number of years, Mr. Cox served on the Board of Governors of the Shrine Directors Association (SDA) of North America and was President of the SDA, covering the United States, Canada and Mexico. He also served as President of the South Atlantic Director's Association and received Emeritus status as a representative from Sudan Temple to the South Atlantic Shrine Association. Marshall Cox worked tirelessly for the benefit of the Crippled and Burned Children's Association. His efforts included transporting numerous children to Shrine hospitals.
He was a member of the Wayne County Shrine Club, served as its President and was a Lifetime Member. He also served as chairman of the Shrine Fish Fry. Marshall was presented the Service Award by the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, and belonged to the Million Dollar Club of the Shriner's Hospital for Children. He served as Master of Ceremonies for the initiation of Shriners into Sudan Temple for many years. In recognition of his dedication and service, he was honored with Life Honorary Memberships to 28 temples throughout North America, including temples as far away as Alaska Temple in Anchorage, Alaska. His dedication to the Shriners continued for the remainder of his life.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Glenn Everett officiating. Burial will follow in the Cox-Thompson Cemetery, with Masonic rites.
The family wishes to express its love and appreciation to the multitude of friends, loved ones, Daniels Church family and medical professionals who extended their love and support to Marshall and his family throughout his extended illness. He was very grateful for the care he received from Drs. Atkins and Marshall and their dedicated, caring staff at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center. The family thanks the many respondents who assisted at the scene of his recent accident, worked tirelessly to extract him and saved his life. The family lifts up thanks to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who blessed his life repeatedly and completely, and through whom Marshall has eternal life.
