SGT. RONALD MELVIN

Sgt. Ronald “Ron” Melvin, 61, 1676 Old Smithfield Road, died Thursday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A homegoing service will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at United In Christ Church, 1314 Patetown Road, with the Rev. Ira Williford officiating. A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Melvin was born in Harrington, Del., July 11, 1945, to the late Frank G. Melvin and Evelyn Sherwood Melvin.

He was a charter member of United In Christ Church and a Vietnam veteran of the Air Force. He started with the Goldsboro Police Department Sept. 22, 1972. He was a patrolman until 1975 when he was promoted to identifications office and then in 1985 to investigator.

He was a graduate of Harrington High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Fayetteville State University. He received the advanced law enforcement certificate from the state of North Carolina.

He retired from the Goldsboro Police Department in 2000 with 30 years of service, during which time he received the Policeman of the Year Award three times.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and past general manager for RDU Airport Taxi.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Melvin; two sons, Sean Melvin and wife, Shannon, of Smithfield and Scott Melvin and wife, Jessica, of LaGrange; three brothers, James “Jimmy” Melvin and wife, Jeanette, of Harrington, Ernest Melvin and wife, Roxanne, of Dover, Del., and Frank Melvin and wife, Diane, of Harrington; two grandchildren, Jala and Dylan Melvin; and a brother-in-law, Billy Dolby of Georgetown, Del.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Dolby.

The family will receive friends following the service Saturday at United In Christ Church.
