WALTER GAINEY

Walter Robert "Bob" Gainey, 76, died Thursday evening at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Walter Calvin and Gladys Futrell Gainey and was preceded in death by a son, Walter Calvin Gainey and a brother, James T. Gainey.

A member of Providence United Methodist Church, he was co-owner of Sandhill Gas & Supply and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served with the 452nd Bomb Wing, where he received the Korean Service Medal with one Silver Star, the U.N. Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Crew War Badge. He was formerly employed as a teacher at Goldsboro High School.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Providence United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Providence Church Cemetery.

Mr. Gainey is survived by Elizabeth "Lib" Gainey of Goldsboro; a daughter, Carol G. Carrere, and her husband, Tim, of Goldsboro; sisters, Judith G. Cates of High Point and Marilyn G. Ryden of Goldsboro; two brothers, Dale B. Gainey, and his wife, Betty, of Goldsboro, Ashley D. Gainey and his wife, Melisia, of Goldsboro; a sister-in-law, Joyce Gainey of Goldsboro; a grandson, J. Fitch Carrere of Goldsboro; two aunts, Agnes Falkner of Henderson and Rachel Futrell of Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family members were to greet friends Monday in the fellowship hall of Providence United Methodist Church immediately following the burial service.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
