RALEIGH -- Alvin Russell Gates, 77, died Tuesday.
The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Swift Creek Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He was born Nov. 24, 1928, in Brownsville, Pa., to the late Hobart and Mildred Gates. He served his country in the Marine Corps and was a 37-year employee of CP&L when he retired in 1991.
He attended Swift Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Susan Gates; a son, Richard Gates and wife, Penny, of Goldsboro; a daughter, LuAnn Stone and husband, Tony, of Greenville; grandchildren, Warren and Caroline Stone; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Sarah Stone; four brothers, Marvin Gates and wife, Ethel, and Charles Gates of Pennsylvania, Keith Gates and wife, Lois, of Virginia, and Jay Gates of Ohio; and six sisters, Reatha Sharpnack and Marcelene Bailey and husband, Robert, of Ohio, Audrey Springer of Oklahoma and Adrienne Gates, Edith Gale Brennstiener and Natalie Matthews of Pennsylvania.
The Gates family wishes to express their special thanks to Dr. Alan Kritz and the staff of the Cancer Centers of North Carolina for the care and concern extended to them.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N. Ennis St., Fuquay-Varina.
