DOUGLAS EDGERTON

May 8, 1927-April 4, 2006

Douglas Manning Edgerton, 78, of 993 Old Kenly Road, died Tuesday at home.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Nahunta Friends Meeting, with Steve Lawrence officiating. Interment will be at Nahunta Cemetery.

Mr. Edgerton was born in Wayne County to the late Anderson Edgerton and Bettie Barnes Edgerton. He was a retired farmer in the Nahunta community and was a member of Nahunta Friends Meeting where he served in several leadership positions and taught Sunday school for 25 years. Mr. Edgerton was a charter member of the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department and retired as a member of its board of directors.

He is survived by one daughter, Janet Sumner, and her husband, Perry, of Goldsboro; one son, Shelton Edgerton, and his wife, Annette, of the home; a daughter-in-law, Karen Collins, and her husband, Lionel, of Pikeville; one granddaughter, Christy Duval, and her husband, Danny, of Gulfport, Miss.; one grandson, Danny Edgerton, and his wife, Melissa, of Pikeville; one brother, John Edgerton, and his wife, Ernestine, of Gastonia; one sister, Lois Sasser, and her husband, Wayne, of Pikeville; four great-grandchildren, Courtney and Hunter Duval and Justin and Tyson Edgerton; two step-granddaughters, Becky and Katie Browde; a step-great-granddaughter, Faith Browde of Knightdale; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Edgerton was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Barnes Edgerton; his stepmother, Crethie Allen Edgerton; one son, Douglas M. Edgerton Jr.; one daughter, Betty Jean Edgerton; and one brother, Rudolph Edgerton.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont, and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department.
