Retired Army 1st Sgt. George Roland Jarvis Sr., 83, went home to his Heavenly Father January 19, 2006, after a long illness.
Roland was born on August 22, 1922, to Arlie and Agnes Jarvis, and spent his childhood in Springs Creek in Beaufort County. He developed a love for fishing and could be found on many Saturdays fishing on his boat, "Papa's Pride".
Roland enlisted in the Army in 1940, and faithfully served his country for 27 years. During his years of service, he fought in WWII, the Korean War, and served in the Special Forces in the Vietnam War. He considered it an honor to serve his country, and was privileged to receive numerous medals for his bravery and valor, including five Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. After his retirement from the Army, Roland continued to serve his country through civil service employment at Cherry Point, retiring after 22 years.
Deeply spiritual and possessing a deep love for God, Roland served in a variety of roles, including elder at Highland Park Christian Church for 37 years.
His love for, and devotion to, his family was always evident. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Hill Jarvis; his daughters, Judy Pelt and husband, Jerry, Deborah Pumphrey and husband, Kenny, Pat Godbold and husband, Jimmy; his son Ronnie and wife, Nicole.
Papa was a devoted and loving grandfather to his grandchildren, Brandon and Beth Pelt, John and David Pumphrey, Trish and Elliott Godbold, and Pauline Jarvis. Also very dear to his heart was his faithful companion Rusty. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce Zelinsky and Ruby Ireland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mildred Ross.
The family received friends at Cotten Funeral Home Saturday evening from 6:30 until 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today at the Highland Park Christian Church. Major Lane and the Rev. Mike Scott will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be in Greenleaf Memorial Park.
