Bruce Hobbs, 67, died Sunday evening at the Brian Center in Goldsboro.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory. The Reverend Bennie Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Old Mill Cemetery.
Mr. Hobbs was born in Wayne County to the late William Coley and Mable Hobbs Coley. He graduated from Dillard High School in 1957 and served in the United States Army. He became a Special Police with the Smithsonian Institution in 1974 and received its personal recognition award for "Ingenuity, Drive, Excellence and Pride" and received a number of other awards including Guard of the Month, and the Official Recognition of Appreciation of Exceptional Services Rendered in the Performance of Duty from 1977-1991. He also received a certificate from National Rifle Association of America for approved course of fire and qualified as Police Sharp Shooter on September 21, 1995. He retired from the Special Police Force in 1998.
He is survived by one daughter, Diane Weeks of Goldsboro; three sons, Bruce Delton Blount and his wife, Judy, of Columbus, Ohio, Ricky Bunn of Mount Rainier, Md., and Marquis Gomez Hobbs of Goldsboro; his stepmother, Helen Coley Pierce of Lanham, Md.; one sister, Subert Reid and her husband, Charles, of Fremont; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a host of special friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hobbs was preceded in death by a daughter, Kecia Shirmane Bell.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home of Diane Weeks, 201 South Alabama Ave.
