EDWARD CHAMPION

RALEIGH -- Edward D. "Ned" Champion, a graduate of Goldsboro High School, died Monday.
He was a the son of the late Horace M. and Sally Williams Champion and the husband of Page Volene Weathersby Champion. He attended Wake Forest College and spent most of his working life was as a radio announcer beginning at WSTP, Salisbury, in 1944. He later announced at WGBR in Goldsboro and WPTF and was supervisor of the Finer Carolina Program of Carolina Power & Light Co. of Carolina Power & Light Co. He served the Dunn Chamber of Commerce as manager for several years before entering sales work. He was a trust officer for First Union Bank in Lumberton and Raleigh before returning to radio announcing with WPTF. He retired in 1993 after 15 years with the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation as Director of Broadcast Services where he supervised and produced radio and TV broadcasts for stations all over North Carolina. He was U.S. Army veteran and was Mason and a member of Dunn Palmyra Lodge No. 147, AF&M.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Lynne Page Barnes of Lumberton, Cheryle Blue Beezley of Tucson, and Joye Leigh Tolley of San Antonio; one son Douglas Ray Champion of Raleigh; one sister, Ruth C. Temple of Fayetteville; and five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
A visitation will be held on Friday from 1 until 3 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh.
A private memorial service for family members will be held at a later date.
