Shirlee Ashton Medina, 34, granddaughter of Annie Ruth Johnson of Goldsboro, died Friday.
Her mother, Ashton Johnson Medina of Raleigh, was born and raised in Wayne County and attended Rosewood High School.
Miss Medina is also survived by her father, George Medina of Raleigh, and a brother, Michael, of Cary.
She was born in San Francisco, Calif., where she lived until the family moved to North Carolina two years ago. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Cathedral High School in San Francisco and San Francisco State University where she received a degree in early childhood development. While at the university, she actively participated in a program for disabled students from her wheelchair. Though unable to work at her chosen profession following graduation, she volunteered at the Holy Family Day Home in San Francisco, and received awards for her work with Head Start and for her perseverance and indomitable spirit in overcoming difficulties in completing her schooling in spite of her battle with multiple sclerosis.
The family received visitors and a rosary was recited on Monday night at 7 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 1701 E. Millbrook Road in Raleigh. The funeral was to be held there today at 1 p.m. Burial was to be in Raleigh Memorial Park.
