REV. W. G. BATTEN

The Rev. W.G. Batten, 94, of 1404 U.S. 111 North, died Tuesday morning at his home.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Whitley Pentecostal Holiness Church in Princeton. The Reverends Chris Thompson, Ferrell Hardison and Edward Tatum will officiate. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery..
Rev. Batten was born in Johnston County on Aug. 10, 1911, to the late L.M. and Bertie Batten. He was a retired Pentecostal Holiness minister and a member of Whitley Pentecostal Holiness Church. He obtained his mission worker's license with the North Carolina Pentecostal Holiness Conference in 1935 and became a local minister in that same year. He was ordained by the conference in 1939 and served in many capacities until 1976, when he was superannuated. Rev. Batten served as pastor of many churches within the conference during this period including Little Creek, Jones Grove, Lambs Grove, Calypso, Belfast, Bizzell's Grove, Green Leaf (Liberty), Niagara, Pikes Crossroads, Saint John's, Antioch, Carson Memorial, Verona, Thompson Chapel, Airboro, and Selma Pentecostal Holiness Church. After retirement in 1976, he continued to be active in the ministry, preaching and singing with the Batten Family Singers.
Rev. Batten is survived by his wife, Margaret H. Batten; three sons, W.J. Batten and his wife, LaRue, of Richmond, Va., Morris H. Batten and his wife, Margie, of Oxford, N.C., and M. L. Roy Batten and his wife, Cathy, of Goldsboro; three daughters, Edna M. Whaley and her husband, Kenneth, of Goldsboro, Myrtle R. Mumford and her husband, Carl F., of Lucama, and Mary Ellen Pate and her husband, H.F. Pate Jr., of Goldsboro; one stepson, Richard Hamm of Goldsboro; two stepdaughters, Debbie Witherington and her husband, Linwood, of Goldsboro and Annette Gurley and her husband, Gene, of Goldsboro; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Noggie Smith of Goldsboro.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Batten was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Mae Howell Batten, and one sister, Madge Irene Smith.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service on Thursday evening, and other times at the residence, 1404 U.S. 111 North in Goldsboro.
The family is being served by Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
