ERSKINE POPE

WINSTON-SALEM -- Erskine "Erk" Lee Pope, 77, died Saturday at his home.
He was born in Goldsboro to Gurney Lee and Eloise Bradshaw Pope. He began his career in the construction business in 1948 and had been principal owner and president of EPCO Construction Co. since 1979, He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Campbell College. He was a member of Forsyth Masonic Lodge 707 and the Winston-Salem Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lou Donnell Pope, with whom he graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1945; two sons, Don Pope and wife, Katie, of Charlotte and Bill Pope and wife, Robin, of Lewisville; one daughter, Carol Richardson, and husband, Bob, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Chad and Courtney Pope of Winston-Salem, Mary Elizabeth and Deas Pope of Charlotte, Wes Richardson of New York City and Blake Richardson of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Pat Toole of Raleigh; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shallowford Presbyterian Church, 1200 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Lewisville, N.C., 27023; or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27103; or to the charity of one's choice.
