RUTH JOHNSON
Ruth Bass Johnson, 75, died of cancer on Thursday in Newport News, Va.
She was born in Sampson County to the late Marion Butler and Lula Peele Bass and was a resident of Wayne County before moving to Newport News, Va., in 1950. She was a homemaker, member of the Deer Park Home Demonstration Club, and an active part of her children's school activities. She taught Sunday School classes for 38 years at Morrison United Methodist Church, where she was a member for 47 years.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clyde Johnson; three children, Deborah Johnson Hess of Hampton, Alan Johnson of Williamsburg, and Amanda Johnson Smith of Gloucester; two brothers, Marion Franklin Bass of Clayton and Donald Wodard Bass of Youngsville; one sister, Hilda Bass Radford of Goldsboro; and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Peninsula Community Chapel with Pastor Tom Kenney officiating. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund of Summit Christian Academy or the Building Fund of Peninsula Community Chapel, 4209 Big Bethel Road, Yorktown, Va., 23693.
