FREMONT -- Helen Estelle Clayton Bass, 84, a more recent resident of Countryside Living, Pikeville, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

She had been an active member of Fremont FWB Church for over 50 years. A member of the Woman's Auxiliary, she held numerous offices and spent many hours with a special cousin, Jean Marlowe, making quilts for church bazaars. Her beautiful handcrafted quilts have become great treasures for her children and grandchildren.

The church honored Mrs. Bass affectionately with "Helen Bass Day" on Sunday, February 2, 2003. She was presented a lifetime membership pin by the Woman's Auxiliary.

Mrs. Bass was a supporter of Mount Olive College and was especially proud of being a "Bridge Builder." An avid sports fan, she was fond of the UNC Tar Heels and the Atlanta Braves. She enjoyed working in her yard and was well known for her chocolate pies.

Her husband, James Lloyd Bass, preceded her in death, in addition to her parents, George and Maggie H. Clayton, and a sister, Mavis C. Davis.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Sunday at 3 p.m. at her church by the Revs. Robert Langley and Billy Toler. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

On Saturday evening, from 7 until 8:30, the family will be at the church and other times at the home of Harold and Georgia Cuddington, 506 S. Hillandale Drive, Fremont.

She is survived by her four daughters, Loydene Proctor and husband, Bobby, Louise and husband, James, and Georgia Cuddington and husband, Harold, all of Fremont, and Jackie Pittman and husband, Tom, of Winston-Salem; a son, Johnny C. Bass and wife, Joni, of Sharpsburg; seven grandchildren, Bobbi Ann Crawford and husband, Ron, of Goldsboro, Jennifer Montague of Fremont and husband, David, of Goldsboro, Mark Blow of Fremont, Mandy Blow and fiancé, Calvin Harvey, of Fremont, Chris Cuddington and wife, Holly, of South Riding, Va., Scott Cuddington and fiancee, Melissa Smith, of Rosewood, and Clay Pittman of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren, Kiera and Alexis Harvey, Caleb and Joshua Crawford, Blake Cuddington and Macy Montague; a stepson, James (Jimmy) R. Bass and family of Norcross, Ga.; and a special niece and nephew.

Flowers are welcome and memorial remembrances are suggested to the church building fund.
