Parents and children will be able to meet teachers, collect schedules and prepare for the upcoming school year during open houses next week at elementary, middle and high schools within the Wayne County Public Schools system.
Twenty eight public schools, operating on the traditional school calendar, will have open house events in anticipation of the first day of school -- Monday, Aug 27. The sessions are an opportunity for parents and students to become familiar with the school, meet teachers, pick up supply lists and ask teachers questions regarding their child's needs.
Open houses for elementary schools are on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Teachers at Edgewood Community Developmental School will contact parents of elementary as well as middle and high school students to schedule an appointment to meet on Tuesday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Middle and high school open houses are Wednesday from 5-7 p.m., with the exception of Brogden Middle School, which will have a meeting for parents at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with classroom visitations to follow.
Eastern Wayne Middle School will hold its regular open house for seventh and eighth graders on Wednesday at the designated time. A special sixth grade open house will be held on Monday from 5-7 p.m.
The only exception to the high school events is at Charles B. Aycock High School, which adjusted its time to accommodate parents who may have to attend open house at CBA as well as feeder school Norwayne Middle. The CBA event will run from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.
WCPS district administrators say teachers and staff look forward to welcoming students and families back to school.
"We want every student to be ready for their first day of classes," said Michael Dunsmore, Wayne County Public Schools superintendent.
"We encourage students and families to take part in open house events and use them as one of their first steps toward completing a successful school year."
Classes are already under way at three district schools -- Goldsboro High, Wayne Early/Middle College High and Wayne School of Engineering -- categorized on the non-traditional academic calendar.
