From left, Joshua Dacey, with the Charles B. Aycock Birthplace, the Rev. Ira Reynolds, First Missionary Baptist Church, and the Rev. Timothy Gore, Fremont Missionary Baptist Church, work to plan the community picnic for August at an organizational meeting Thursday at the birthplace in Fremont.

Planning is underway for a community picnic in northern Wayne County on Aug. 18.

In an effort to bring together area residents, churches and people from all walks of life, 14 different organizations, primarily churches, are organizing the event set that will be held at the Charles B. Aycock Birthplace, at 264 Governor Aycock Road in Fremont.

The free picnic is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch being served between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Traditional picnic fare is planned, including hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and water.

An organizational meeting was held Thursday at the birthplace, with nearly a dozen people participating in planning for the event, which is an effort to showcase the historic birthplace as well as bring together people from the area, said the Rev. Travis Moore, Cornerstone Assembly of God pastor.

"I think this picnic is by far the largest event we've had so far," said the Rev. Ira Reynolds, First Missionary Baptist Church pastor. "We're praying that this will be successful. It's been a lot of work, a lot of meetings to make this work.

"The purpose is to bring unity in the community, so we started by bringing all the churches together, all the pastors together, and from there we bring the community together. This type of thing takes everybody to bring ideas to the table."

During the event, there will be live music, dancing, outdoor games, activities and inflatable rides throughout the day. Other hands-on activities for the whole family, include butter making and tours of the historic birthplace.

Having the event at the historic site allows the public a chance to see its garden, which provides produce for the food bank in Fremont, Moore said.

The churches and organizations involved in helping organize the event include Cornerstone Assembly of God, St. James Church of Christ, Pathway to Life United Holy Church, Gospel Tabernacle Church, New Daniel Chapel, New Bethel Church, Fremont Missionary Baptist Church, Fremont United Methodist Church, Morning Star Church, Norwayne Alumni and Friends, Fremont First Baptist Church, Zoae Christian Church and First Missionary Baptist Church.

The Charles B. Aycock Birthplace is also helping plan and organize the event. For additional information, call 919-920-1670.
