Several Wayne Community College courses that prepare students for careers in health care will begin in August.
Medical billing and coding is an online course that is taught in two parts across the fall semester. It leads to a certificate from the college and the opportunity to seek certification as a certified professional coder from the American Academy of Professional Coders.
Part I introduces medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. It also teaches the fundamentals of medical coding, billing and insurance. Part II covers health insurance and selecting appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes, as well as legal, moral and ethical issues.
A course that provides the qualifications necessary to work as an activity director in a healthcare-related setting will be taught this fall. It includes 60 hours of classroom instruction and 30 hours of clinical experience in an approved skilled nursing facility.
Also offered will be Nurse Aide II for students who have completed Nurse Aide I. It provides more complex skills for working with patients or residents of skilled nursing facilities. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, graduates are eligible to apply for listing as a Nursing Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. This course includes 80 hours of classroom and lab instruction and 80 hours of clinical rotation. Interested persons should contact WCC Workforce Continuing Education for prerequisites.
A Nurse Aide I Pre-Exam Skills Lab will be held. The course is a four-hour review for students preparing for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam for nurse aide certification.
The registration fee for each of the courses is $180, except the Skills Lab, which costs $20.
All of the courses are provided by the college's Workforce Continuing Education Division.
