Wayne students attend Governor's School

Three local students have been chosen to attend the 2018 session of Governor's School this summer.
The rising seniors are representing Wayne County Public Schools at the prestigious school.
Chosen to participate were Weston Hersey from Charles B. Aycock High School, Coral Maxwell from Spring Creek High School and Malia McKay from Southern Wayne High.
The oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation will have 670 rising juniors and seniors participating in the summer session that started June 17 and runs until July 25.
The program is open to rising seniors with exceptions made to include rising juniors in selected areas of the performing arts.
Each school system, charter school and private school in the state is allotted a certain number of nominations for 10 specialization areas -- English, foreign language, math, natural science, social science, art, choral music, instrumental music, theater and dance.
Former Gov. Terry Sanford founded the Governor's School of North Carolina in 1963. The program does not involve credit, tests or grades.
It is located on two campuses. Governor's School West is at Salem College in Winston-Salem, and East is on the Meredith College campus in Raleigh.
The three local students are all attending Governor's School East, participating in the English program.
