A Goldsboro man accused of trying to steal jewelry from a Berkeley Mall kiosk Sunday was arrested by police in the mall parking lot.

Goldsboro police responding to a trespassing call at about 9:50 p.m. arrived at the mall and arrested Anthony Deshaun Martin, 21, of 2104 S. John St. Martin was charged with one felony count of preparation to commit burglary and one felony count of attempted breaking and entering, according to police.

Martin was seen on surveillance video by mall security officer Annette Blount, dressed in all black walking down the interior hallway of the mall. He exited the mall and was then located by police hiding next to a dumpster, at the rear entrance to the Belk department store.

After reviewing the surveillance video, police determined that Martin was hiding inside the mall after closing. Martin emerged from hiding and was seen climbing into a jewelry kiosk and attempted to enter the cabinets of the kiosk, located near the center of the mall, according to police. At that point, the kiosk alarm was triggered, and Martin fled from the mall to the outside parking lot where he was apprehended by police.

He was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $4,000 secured bond.
