MOUNT OLIVE -- An early Saturday afternoon wreck claimed the life of a Sampson County woman.

Shirley King Monk, 69, of 424 McKoy St., Apt D, Clinton, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on U.S. 117 South near its intersection with Old Smith Chapel Road just south of Mount Olive.

The wreck happened at 12:18 p.m.

Monk was driving a 2007 Chevy Impala headed north in the outside lane of U.S. 117 when her car was struck from behind by a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser, operated by Ashley Paige Marriner, 19, of 160 Ramblewood Drive, said N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper N.J. Sanders.

After impact, Monk's vehicle left the roadway and came to rest on the right shoulder while the Cruiser overturned and came to rest on its side in the roadway.

Marriner was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care with non-life threatening injuries.

Monk was pronounced dead on the scene by Wayne County EMS personnel.

Speed and inattention contributed to the collision, according to the patrol. No alcohol or drug impairment was suspected or detected, according to the Highway Patrol.

No charges have been filed at this time. Charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
