Suspect in Saturday shooting surrenders

The suspect wanted in a shooting over the weekend turned himself in to the authorities Monday.
Demarcus Martrell Davis, 33, 7008 E. Spruce St., wanted for the shooting of Ashley Oates, 34, walked into the Goldsboro Police Department at 1:30 p.m. and turned himself in, according to police.
Davis was charged with attempted murder, firing into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was taken before a magistrate and booked in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $655,000 secured bond.
On Saturday at 12:22 p.m., police responded to a call of a victim being shot at the intersection of Slocumb and Ash streets. Officers arrived on the scene and found Oates sitting inside her vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. The location of the shooting was later determined to have taken place at the intersection of South Slocumb Street and Westbrook Road.
Oates was the only person in the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported in the area, where residents were outside at a church picnic and shopping at local stores.
Oates was taken by ambulance to Wayne UNC Health Care and was later transported to Vidant Medical Center. She was listed in stable condition Saturday evening and has since been released from the hospital, said Sgt. B.H. Canady, with the Goldsboro Police Department.
Davis emerged as the prime suspect in the shooting, and officers issued warrants for his arrest shortly after the incident. Officers determined that the shooting was the result of a domestic disturbance between Davis and Oates, who were in a relationship.
The shooting frightened residents in the Slocumb Street area. Several people said they heard multiple gunshots, and one woman said she is thankful others were not injured. Davis had his first court appearance in Wayne County District Court on Tuesday.
