Brett Lancaster, a U.S. Cellular store manager in Goldsboro, helps Boys and Girls Club member Messiah, 7, open and spread a bag of mulch at the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County on Friday during the Month of Giving event celebrating Earth Day. The cellphone coverage provider donates $1 million annually to educational programs that benefit students in grades K-12.

A $10,000 donation to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne and Johnston counties by U.S. Cellular will provide educational opportunities to K-12 science students.

For the fourth year, the cellphone company has provided funding to 53 Boys and Girls clubs with a nationwide $1 million contribution, $71,000 of which is being applied in North Carolina.

The commitment follows a national and local trend in which schools and community partners are emphasizing student-programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM for short.

"U.S. Cellular is committed to enhancing youth learning experiences in our local communities and proud to continue working with Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne/Johnston counties to invest in our future leaders," said Jeremy Taylor, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in eastern North Carolina. "Throughout the year, we strive to provide youth with unique, interactive opportunities, which showcase real-world applications for STEM careers."

In a further show of support, U.S. Cellular volunteers ---- in acknowledgment of National Volunteer Month being recognized in April ---- turned up at local Boys and Girls clubs Friday to help beautify club campuses for Earth Day.

Volunteers from the Goldsboro area worked with club members by cleaning up and planting flowers around the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County located on Royall Avenue.

Since 2009, U.S. Cellular has donated a total of $10.65 million to similar programs in grade school education.
