Council to review ABC store site plans

The Goldsboro City Council will review site and landscape plans for a new Alcoholic Beverage Control store planned along Wayne Memorial Drive, near Tommy's Road.
The site and landscape plan for the store, which would be built behind the Walmart Neighborhood Market, is part of the council's agenda and can be voted on, along with several other business items, with a single council vote.
The council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall, at 214 N. Center St.
The site plans, recommended by the Goldsboro Planning Commission, include a 5,000-square-foot building, 33 parking spaces and an entrance along Wayne Memorial Drive.
A loading dock is planned at the rear of the building, along with an extended driveway for truck deliveries and a stormwater retention pond. Landscaping includes trees along Wayne Memorial Drive and a vegetative buffer between the property and a residential area to the south. Landscaping is also planned at the rear of the property.
The ABC store, which will become Wayne County's sixth location, is near Tommy's Road Elementary School but its location meets site-distance requirements set by state law, said Michael Myrick, general manager of the Wayne County ABC Board.
State law, which used to require a 50-foot site distance from a school or church, has been updated to only require stores not be located within an "unreasonable" distance.
The store, estimated to cost between $800,000 to $1 million to build, is expected to become one of the county's highest-performing stores with service to northern areas of the county.
The council will meet at 5 p.m. for a work session. The work session will include updates on the summer youth employment program and the city's $5 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, TIGER, grant for the next phase of streetscape improvements downtown.
The council will also discuss plans for its annual retreat in March.
The work session will be in the second-floor conference room of the City Hall annex, at 200 N. Center St.
