Trooper J.T. Creech, with the N.C. Highway Patrol, investigates the scene of an overturned asphalt truck on N.C. 581 and Gurley Road Monday afternoon.

A section of N.C. Highway 581 was shut down Monday afternoon after a single-vehicle wreck sent a Currie man to the hospital.

A Southern Asphalt truck, driven by Anthony Newkirk, overturned after the driver over corrected, said Trooper J.T. Creech, with the N.C. Highway Patrol. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Newkirk was transported to Wayne UNC Health Care for treatment. The extent of his injuries was unknown at the time of the accident.

Emergency personnel worked to clear the scene of the wreck, which happened shortly after noon, and a portion of N.C. 581, at Gurley Road, was closed to traffic for 45 minutes.

Newkirk, of Currie, was charged with reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt, Creech said. The Southern Asphalt truck driven by Newkirk was listed as based out of Wilmington.
