A former child care worker at the Goldsboro Family Y was arrested last week for misdemeanor child abuse.

Goldsboro police arrested 25-year-old Joshelyn Parker, 1407 Humphrey St., on Feb. 15 and charged her with misdemeanor child abuse.

Information obtained from a police report said that the child started coming home with bruises and cuts shortly after Parker was hired at the Goldsboro YMCA.

The boy's father said his fiancée noticed scratches on their 2-year-old son's neck and throat when the child was picked up on Feb.5.

He said that the YMCA was slow to answer concerns he had.

Police said a video shows the childcare worker allegedly grabbing a young boy by the neck and jacket and dragging him from the gymnasium into a classroom.

John Richards, who serves as chief executive officer of YMCA would not provide information on how long Parker had been employed or when she was fired.

Richards did, however, release a statement asserting that the Y is cooperating with police, as well as conducting an internal investigation.

"The Goldsboro Police Department and the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education are investigating an incident involving a former Y employee for allegations of inflicting physical injury on a child," the statement said.

"The Y is fully cooperating with the authorities. Since 1984, the Goldsboro Family YMCA has provided this community with a safe environment for individuals and families. Safety is our primary concern. As such, our Y will also be conducting our own internal investigation into the allegations against the employee as they relate to the Y and depending upon the results of the investigations, will act accordingly."

The childcare center at the Y has a state rating of three out of five stars.
