DUDLEY -- A woman and her two small children escaped unharmed Saturday afternoon from a fire that destroyed their Durham Lake Road mobile home.

Shauna Lewis, her 5-year-old son and 18-month-old son were home at the time the fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m.

An electrical short is believed to have caused the fire.

"She ended up smelling a little smoke, and then she saw some fire in the kitchen kind of coming up from the floor near a window," said Marc-Mac Fire Chief Tommy Baker. "She thought she had it out.

"But she went ahead and got the kids out. She walked down to a neighbor's house and when she came back out it was burning up. But she did the right thing to get the kids on out."

The trailer and contents were total losses, Baker said.

The home was valued at about $3,000 and the contents around $10,000, he said.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the family. Anyone who would like to help the family that lost everything should contact the Red Cross.

Thoroughfare, Dudley and Grantham fire departments provided mutual aid.

The call came in at 2:02 p.m., and firefighters were on the scene until close to 5 p.m.
