The Wayne County Board of Education recognized seven of the county's public schools for their effective implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support.
The schools received recognition from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction before the holidays for their achievement
"PBIS is designed to create a positive school environment through schoolwide practices that promote appropriate student behaviors," stated Michelle Hamm, Wayne County Public Schools exceptional children director. "While all students can benefit from PBIS, we have found that those students with behavioral challenges are better able to achieve academic and social success when schools implement PBIS with a high level of fidelity."
Essentially, PBIS utilizes three tiers of intervention practices and organizational behavioral support systems to help transform how students interact with one another and in a teaching and learning environment. As part of the application process for these designations, NCDPI evaluated multiple reports from each school to assess behavior and academic data.
* Northeast Elementary received a PBIS Green Ribbon School designation because the faculty and staff at the schools demonstrated high levels of implementation, showing improved behaviors and student performance.
* Carver Elementary, Edgewood Community Developmental School, Grantham Elementary, North Drive Elementary, and Tommy's Road Elementary received a PBIS Model School designation. This designation is given to schools which completed all of the requirements for Green Ribbon Schools, as well as completed the second stage of PBIS training. Model Schools also demonstrated higher levels of implementation, improved behaviors and student performance.
* Grantham Middle received a PBIS Exemplar School designation. This designation is given to schools which completed all of the requirements of Green Ribbon Schools and Model Schools, as well as completed the third stage of PBIS training. Exemplar Schools also demonstrated high levels of implementation, improved behaviors and student performance.
WCPS has been a part of the statewide PBIS initiative since 2006. Layers of support are provided to schools by the district and the state in the form of consultation and training.
