Charles B. Aycock High School teacher Tammy Vail has been promoting altruism at Charles B. Aycock High School.
Earlier this year, she encouraged all homeroom students to create and post unselfies, pictures of themselves holding paper pledges to do acts of kindness and pictures of themselves performing acts of kindness. Mrs. Vail also spearheaded a project that provided toys for Mrs. Gregory's Life Skills class. CBA's DECA members and Mrs. Vail's fourth period class volunteered to buy items from the Life Skills class's wish list. The gifts were received on Dec. 19.
DECA also raised $1,000 for Kitty Askins. A pink tree with twelve angels and several butterflies was set up at CBA. Angels were adorned with the requests of items of patients at Kitty Askins with terminal illnesses. The butterflies suggested items that could be donated to the pantry at Kitty Askins. Items were placed under the tree from Dec. 4 until Dec. 15.
Treating others with kindness was also celebrated when Mrs. Jennifer Edmundson's AYC raised $1,617 to help students in need. The grade levels competed from Dec. 4 until Dec. 15 to see which grade level could raise the most money. AYC members visited homerooms and collected donations. The sophomore class won the competition.
CBA's students also donated their blood and their time. Faye Davis and HOSA conducted a blood drive on Dec. 14. CBA collected 125 units. HOSA members also volunteered at the Soup Kitchen on Dec. 24. Daisha Holmes, a HOSA member, stated, "This soup kitchen event is important to me because there are many families during Christmas who don't get the privilege to eat a decent meal, or at all."
