Crews with the Rubicon Group work on the facade for a new Ashley Furniture store on North Berkeley Boulevard Thursday.

The former Kmart shopping center on North Berkeley Boulevard is starting to take shape as two new businesses prepare to open in 2018.

Plans have been in the works for months to open a new Planet Fitness location, inside the former Kmart store, at 201 N. Berkeley Blvd., with plans for a February opening, said Brittany Vick, Planet Fitness director of marketing.

"We are very eager to announce that Planet Fitness will be opening in early February to Goldsboro, N.C.," Vick said.

A Planet Fitness trailer was added to the property a couple weeks ago, allowing future customers to sign up early, with a $1 down offer and a monthly membership cost of $10. The company has also started mailing promotional materials to county residents, noting a Jan. 10 signup deadline and the ability to join the club through the Planet Fitness website.

Presale hours at the trailer are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

"While we are currently in construction, we do have a presale trailer set up in the same parking lot where we will be opening," Vick said. "We welcome residents of Goldsboro to stop by and visit the presale trailer for additional information about the club, and also invite them to join Planet Fitness before we open for only $1 down, then just $10 a month, with no commitments."

Crews were onsite this week working inside the former Kmart store, where Planet Fitness will occupy about 20,000 square feet of the nearly 103,000-square-foot building.

Planet Fitness, which is new to the Goldsboro market, will have a large exercise equipment area, with exercise equipment lined up in rows, and other areas for stretching, workouts and designated 30-minute workouts. In addition to male and female locker rooms, Planet Fitness will have showers, tanning areas and offer massages and hydromassages.

The club operates 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Within the same shopping center, interior renovations have started on what will become a new Ashley Furniture store, said Kenneth Talton, Goldsboro zoning administrator.

The furniture store is set to open inside the former Save-A-Lot building, at 211 N. Berkeley Blvd., next to Chuck E Cheese. Crews with the Rubicon Group recently started adding a new facade to the outside of the building.
