North Carolina Symphony to bring Holiday Pops to city

You know Christmas is almost here when the North Carolina Symphony brings its Holiday Pops Concert to Goldsboro.
The concert will take place Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
This year's event will be a festive mix of traditional holiday music such as "Joy to the World" and 'Winter Wonderland" together with spirited classical selections like Rimsky-Korsakov's "Dance of the Tumblers" and Bizet's "Farandole."
"This year we are also proud to perform a work by a former North Carolina Symphony musician, bass trombonist and composer Terry Mizesko, who retired from the symphony in May," said Meredith Laing, director of communications for the symphony. His piece is "Dances from a Chanukah Celebration."
"There will be the traditional sing-along where the symphony and the audience have the chance to make music together," Ms. Laing said.
She said this show is always special for the symphony because it's the group's first Holiday Pops concert of the year.
"There is palpable excitement as our musicians and associate conductor David Glover kick off the holiday season," Ms. Laing said. "Our musicians love to get in the spirit with festival holiday accessories -- sometimes even decorating their instruments.
"We also love that the concert coincides with the tree lighting in Goldsboro. There is a feeling of holiday cheer in the air, as the concert takes place just afterward."
Ms. Laing said the symphony hopes those attending the concert feel a sense of community in experiencing joyful music together in the Paramount Theatre, and that that joy carries through the rest of the holiday season.
Some selections this year will be variations on "Joy to the World," "Carol of the Bells: Ukranian Christmas Carol," selection from "Serenade of Carols," "Dances from a Chanukah Celebration," "Sleigh Ride" by Frederick Delius, "O Tannenbaum" and "Dance of the Tumblers" from "Snow Maiden."
Other songs include "A Christmas Festival," "Farandole" from "L'Ariesienne," "Christmas Fantasy," "Winter Wonderland" and "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson.
The North Carolina Symphony was founded in 1932. Its members perform 175 concerts annually for adults and schoolchildren in more than 90 North Carolina counties -- in concert halls, auditoriums, gymnasiums, restaurants, clubs and outdoor settings.
The symphonyhas 66 full-time professional musicians under the leadership of music director Grant Llewellyn.
