Someone asked me the other day if October was a difficult month for me, seeing as how it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I had been diagnosed with the disease three years ago.
Surprisingly, perhaps, that is not the case.
In fact, October has become my favorite month because of all the awareness efforts that are out there, like the annual event on the front lawn of Wayne Memorial Hospital.
This year the theme was "Erase the Fear," a poignant, prevalent and most appropriate slant, since nothing and no one can prepare you for when that diagnosis comes and hits home.
And I, a reporter as well as now a breast cancer survivor, got to juggle the role between covering a story and also being part of it.
Fourteen of us "survivors" participated in a fashion show, featuring clothes from area boutiques and shops.
Amid the sea of pink, the stories were as varied and unique as the individuals living them out.
Some still nursing battle scars, others relieved that more time has passed and a semblance of normalcy has returned.
It is, as I have shared numerous times, a club I never wanted to join. And yet it is one I am most proud to hold membership in -- for within it, I have met the most marvelous, bold, courageous and inspiring women and men.
