Goldsboro Police Chief Mike West said Thursday the victim of the city's most recent homicide was defending himself against a failed robbery attempt when he was shot October 11.
Robert Baymon, 60, of 516 Eason St., died at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville Wednesday after succumbing to injuries sustained during an armed robbery earlier in the month.
Baymon reportedly allowed two strangers into his home Oct. 11 at 3 a.m., who then tried to rob him. He fought back, and was shot twice. The would-be robbers did not get away with anything.
It remains unclear why Baymon let the two men into his home.
West said Baymon was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care before being taken to Vidant, and was not thought to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
Then, Wednesday, West said the police department got a phone call from the hospital that said Baymon was in grave condition.
He then died at about 6 p.m.
West said the hospital did not provide a reason for why Baymon's prognosis turned south so quickly.
Police are working to follow-up on information on potential suspects.
West said there is no reason to believe the murder was gang-related.
