Authorities are searching for a suspect who crashed into a Jefferson Court Apartments building after leading them on a chase Wednesday night.

Maj. Richard Lewis with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the chase started when a deputy saw the suspect leave a convenience store at the corner of East Ash Street and Jefferson Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Lewis said the driver was driving left of center once they got onto East Ash Street and almost hit the deputy.

When the officer turned around to stop the car and investigate why the suspect was driving erratically, the car was gone.

The chase -- which involved sheriffs deputies and Goldsboro police officers -- led authorities on a winding path as the suspect tried to lose the blue lights and sirens chasing him.

Lewis said the driver eventually got back on Jefferson Avenue after taking several side roads.

The driver then went through a red light at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Royall Avenue, tried to take a turn directly after the intersection, lost control and slammed into the front of a Jefferson Court Apartments building.

Lewis said the driver hit a light pole, causing several transformers to blow and knocking out power for citizens in the area.

The driver was able to get away from the scene of the crash and is still on the loose.

Lewis said authorities are investigating the incident and trying to track the driver down.

There is no suspect description at this time.

The suspect was reportedly driving a 2010 or 2011 Dodge Charger.
